The Bacchante, 1853 is a painting by Jean-LĂ©on GĂ©rĂŽme ( French painter and sculptor in the style now known as academicism. The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits, and other subjects, bringing the academic painting tradition to an artistic climax.)
A Bacchante in Roman mythology is a female follower of Bacchus, god of wine and intoxication. In Greek mythology, they are called Maenads. … Bacchantes are depicted as mad or wild women, running through the forest, tearing animals to pieces, and engaging in other acts of frenzied intoxication.
This painting or the bacchantes were not really my inspiration for the underneath portrait … some mental imagery are overlapping…
I thought there would be more paintings representing woman with rams’s horns other that this one from Jean Leon Gerome ( biography in French here)

Les cornes en spirale se retrouvent souvent figurĂ©es sur les casques des guerriers. La tĂȘte de bĂ©lier a donnĂ© son nom Ă une arme de butoir (le bĂ©lier de siĂšge). Et dans la mythologie grecque, le bĂ©lier est un des animaux favoris d’HermĂšs, le messager des dieux.
Dans la mythologie celte, le bĂ©lier symbolise la force de la nature ainsi que la fertilitĂ©. – Dans la mythologie grecque, le bĂ©lier est Ă©galement un symbole important dont le mythe de la toison d’or n’est que l’un des nombreux aspects. Le bĂ©lier est un des animaux favoris d’HermĂšs. – Dans l’Ăgypte antique, le bĂ©lier est associĂ© Ă de nombreux dieux, dont le plus prestigieux est le dieu dynastique Amon. Il est Ă©galement le symbole des eaux bondissantes des cataractes du Nil et de son inondation annuelle (Khnoum).

J’ai trouvĂ© cette photos sur pinterest avec pour seul ‘credit’: “two pals, 1920”. C Tout!
L’idĂ©e de travailler a partir de photos est de reprendre les lignes de l’image, l’Ă©nergie de la composition et progressivement au fil du dessin, se l’approprier sans trop y penser.
ici C’Ă©tait un peu comme ‘croquer’ la connivence entre ces deux ‘guys’

Le berger est de retour / the sheherd is back

(FR) VoilĂ , le berger intemporel est de retour! – Je pensais avoir quelques difficultĂ©s Ă me remettre dans le projet (projet vieux de 4 ans abandonnĂ© selon la formule consacrĂ©e pour ” raison de santĂ©”… et autres alĂ©as associĂ©s.
On retrouve alors des lignes (physionomie du caractĂšre essentiellement) que l’on a tellement tourbillonnĂ©es et entortillĂ©es qu’elles sont restĂ©es en sommeil au bouts des doigts, comme une “sub-mĂ©moire” graphique.
L’attaque (Oh le terme guerrier en toute exagĂ©ration !) se fait par la page qui m’avait posĂ©e quelques problĂšmes alors, celle oĂč le personnage s’inquiĂšte tellement que son visage s’allonge jusqu’au nombril. Le dilemme Ă©tant que lorsque on allonge le visage d’un enfant, il devient ado voir une sorte de freak qui ne ‘match’ pas avec le reste des image du livre.
Quoi qu’il en soit, c’est un sentiment agrĂ©able que celui de finaliser les choses, ne plus laisser trop d’Ă©nergie vitale et crĂ©atrice se dissoudre dans l’air.

(ENGL) That’s it! The timeless shepherd is back! – I thought I would have some difficulties to get back into this project (a 4 years old project abandoned for “health reasons” and other associated hazards). I once swirled the lines of the main character in so many directions that they remained dormant at my fingertips, like a graphic “sub-memory”.
I just resumed the drawing by a rather problematic page to me, the one where the character is so worried that his face stretch down to to the belly button.
The dilemma is that when you lengthen a child’s face, he starts to look like a teenager or some kind of freak that does not match the rest of the story.
At the end of the day, it feels quite good to carry on and aiming at finalising a project in which we believe.

Tropical Flower / Doodle book

Recently, I really fell in love with the work of two amazing artists: Olaf Hajek and Luisa Rivera.
The esthetical emotion I felt when facing their Work met my new desire to include more natural elements in my drawing, precisely more tropical nature (for some unknown reasons).
The connection between the botanical elements and the body within this two artist’s artwork deeply moved to me.
 As, I started to practice, and filled my sketchbook with those winding and imperial stems, inspired by the charisma of orchids, enjoying the dynamic shapes of roots and flower bulbs…
I am still standing at the doodle stage – hope to reach the mix media process soon – get a hand from “photoshop” and “illustrator” Â đ
I also felt that, connected with people, those natural elements would be a magnificent way to express the emotions of the characters I would draw and particularly things that happen to the body such as happy feelings as well as illness which can overtake it in various proportions. I will post about it soon.Â

J’ai rĂ©cemment dĂ©couvert deux artistes magnifiques: Olaf Hajek and Luisa Rivera.
L’Ă©motion esthĂ©tique que j ai ressenti face Ă leur travail  a rejoint mon envie d’inclure d’avantages d’Ă©lĂ©ments botaniques dans mes dessins, des Ă©lĂ©ments tropicaux plus prĂ©cisĂ©ment.
Dans le travail de ces deux artistes, la connection entre les Ă©lĂ©ments naturels et le corps m’a beaucoup Ă©mu.  J’ai ainsi commencĂ© Ă remplir mes carnets avec ces sinueuses et impĂ©riales tiges, inspirĂ©e par le charisme des orchidĂ©es, les racines volantes et les bulbes floraux !
J’en suis, pour l’heure, au stade du gribouillage libre –  papier/crayons –  j’espĂšre passer Ă l Ă©tape suivante bientĂŽt, un peu de “Photoshop” par ci, un peu  “Illustrateur” par lĂ …
J’ai aussi beaucoup aimĂ©, chez ces deux artistes, l’association “nature tropicale” et “corps”; une  maniĂšre puissante d’exprimer les emotions des personnage et plus particuliĂšrement toutes ces choses qui se passent dans le corps, ces emotions heureuses  mais aussi ces maladies qui peuvent Ă©ventuellement l’envahir dans des proportions diverses. Je posterai Ă ce sujet bientĂŽt.

This âdoodle bookâ Workshop is about Learning with the children how to make, step by step, a doodle-book â create, with them, a practical and esthetic base for further creations (cards, posters, booksâŠ) or not – most fo the time not â a doodle may remain a doodle, beautiful as it is!
Lisa Congdon doodling manifesto, that you can find on her web site  inspired and helped me to organise the workshop: I relied on it as a guideline (I selected and summarised a few points that sound paramount and add my own points as well) to outline the workshop.
I love Lisa Congdon‘s work because I can feel the complexity, the work and experience behind  the most simple lines she draws. I love her sens of color and the way she elegantly fills the surface she works on. I have been advertising her work to everyone who showed a little interest to the doodle activity!!! Her graphic universe gives such a good insight of  what the doodle world could contain.

 LâAtelier consiste Ă apprendre aÌ reÌaliser un cahier de “croquis”, de recherches d’idĂ©es et de lignes, Ă creÌer avec les enfants une base pratique et estheÌtique pour des reÌalisations futures (livres, âflyersâ, posters, cartesâŠ) ou le plus souvent, pour le âdoodleâ lui mĂȘme, tel qu’il est, suffisant Ă lâinspiration quâil renferme!
Le Manifeste du Doodle de Lisa Congdon  mâa guidĂ© dans ma prĂ©paration de lâatelier. Jâen ai fait une traduction globale et  trĂšs simplifiĂ©e pour le rendre accessible aux enfants et en faire une prĂ©sentation orale, rapide en dĂ©but dâatelier.
La complexitĂ© et l’experience se pressentent derriĂšre les lignes les plus Ă©purĂ©es du travail de Lisa Congdon. Son sens le la couleur et sa maniĂšre de couvrir les surfaces sur lesquelles elle travaille sont si plaisants Ă observer. Je vante son travail auprĂšs de chaque personne qui s’intĂ©resse quelque peu aux “Doodles” car il donne un trĂšs bel exemple de ce que l’univers du doodle promet.
